Canada's Blue Mountain is for more than just ski enthusiasts. Deep within the mountain, part of the Niagara Escarpment, exist the spectacular Scenic Caves.

Anyone visiting the Collingwood, Ontario area, should be sure to visit the Scenic Caves - one of Canada's great natural wonders. Formed by glacial ice hundreds of millions of years ago, they are situated atop Blue Mountain, at the highest point of the Niagara Escarpment, and have been designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

The labyrinthine caves and crevices can be explored in great detail by following marked paths. There are no guided tours so be sure to grab a guidebook and use caution when navigating the sometimes slippery, terrain. Hiking boots or running shoes with good treads are an absolute must. Ice and snow can last well into the late summer, and the rocks are often icy. Running shoes are sold on-site for those who come with inappropriate footwear.

History of Scenic Caves

Not only are the caves an amazing natural formation, they are also rich in history. In the 17th-century the caves were used as a fortress by the Huron Natives, specifically the Petun tribe.

Points of Interest at Scenic Caves

  • Indian Council Chamber - Before descending into the caves, step onto an unsupported rock foundation high above Collingwood and Georgian Bay beyond and see where Indian Chiefs gathered for secret tribe meetings. Cross over on a narrow metal bridge, as opposed to the log the Natives used and then took away to ensure complete privacy.
  • Fat Man's Misery - Claustrophobics beware of this narrow crevice. The opening is only 14 inches at the narrowest point and can induce fear in even the bravest hikers. Don't be embarrassed to take the metal path around that particular cave. Hikers who choose to do it should use the buddy system, just in case someone slips or gets stuck.
  • Petun Fortress - Deep within the caves is an area where tribes would meet without fear of ambush by invaders. Hikers can see four separate exits, one in each direction of the compass, where an escape could be made. It was truly a naturally made fortress.

The Natural Wonder of Scenic Caves

Above the caves there are forests full of sugar maples and red oak, and the area is full Ontario's provincial flower, the trillium. Within the depths of the mountain exist the caves. The giant limestone rocks will dwarf any human who enters into their domain. Often hidden from the sun, the entire area stays damp and cool, and an abundance of rare ferns and moss grow.

A visit to Scenic Caves offers visitors a valuable lesson in history, a spectacular tour through a natural wonder, and incredible views of the surrounding area. For more information visit www.sceniccaves.com. The experience is one you will not forget.
