Celebrate Yuletide in Canada’s Capital City

Ottawa is abound with Christmas lights, tours, concerts, markets, open houses and outdoor activities for all ages.

There is magic in the air in Ottawa at Christmas. Cold weather and sparkling snow sets the scene for a wonderful holiday season. There are many activities for everyone to enjoy.

Open House at Canada Parliament Buildings

From December 26th to December 30th, there is an open house at the Centre Block from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. The halls are beautifully decorated and there is the opportunity to go up to the top of the Peace Tower for a spectacular view of Ottawa’s city lights.

Ottawa: Christmas Lights Across Canada

Until January 6th, Parliament Hill, museums and well-known landmarks along Confederation Boulevard are illuminated with lights in a display named Christmas Lights Across Canada. Over the years, more sites have been added to this popular display.

Ottawa: Lights in the Capital Tour

For one day only, Saturday December 22nd at 6:30pm, Gray Line hosts a tour of Ottawa’s city lights. This guided tour is 2 ½ hours long and begins near Parliament Hill. Participants are taken to the best displays in the city.

Ottawa: Canada Science and Technology Museum

On December 8th and 9th, kids will be able to talk to Santa through amateur radio. The Holiday Cookie Caper game will be held afterwards where kids learn about the chemistry of baking. In addition, there will be the opportunity to make a string of lights to take home. On the Winter Solstice on December 21st, there will be a slate of special family activities. During Christmas school break, the museum will be using toys to teach the laws of physics.

ByWard Market Ottawa

Established in 1826, this is Canada’s oldest and largest public market located in downtown Ottawa. During the holiday season, the market will offer natural Christmas decorations and Christmas trees.

Ottawa: National Arts Centre

During December, a series of Christmas-themed performances will be presented:

  • The Nutcracker Suite - The Royal Winnipeg Ballet
  • Handel’s Messiah – Trevor Pinnock conductor
  • Christmas with the NAC Orchestra – featuring Andrew Craig’s Gospel Christmas
  • Scrooges Need Not Apply: Tales of Christmas Past and A Christmas Carol

On December 16th at 12:30, the National Arts Centre Orchestra presents their annual Christmas FanFair Concert and Carol Sing-Along in support of the Snowsuit Fund and Food Bank. Activities include an appearance by the Ottawa Regional Youth Choir and a carol sing-along. A bake sale will be held prior to the concert.

The National Arts Center is hosting two events on New Years Eve. An evening of dining and dancing will be held in the main foyer. Music provided by Johnny Vegas All-Star Band. The restaurant, Le Café will be open for a New Years Eve dinner. In conjunction with the Ottawa Folk Festival, Juno Award Winner Connie Kaldor will perform New Years Eve at the National Arts Centre.

As you can see, there is plenty to do in Ottawa during the Christmas season. On days when special events are not scheduled, there is the opportunity to tour the Parliament Buildings, visit the various museums and do your Christmas shopping at the local malls and markets.
