From the Art Gallery to concerts to plays, there is much to entertain any fan of the arts in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. Whether you are from the area or just passing through, be sure to check out as many of these great attractions as possible. The Art Gallery of AlgomaThe Art Gallery of Algoma is home to more than 5000 permanent works of art and artists’ resources. Each year, 24 exhibitions are put on display showcasing works by a variety of local, national, and international artists. The gallery also offers educational programming, including summer Art Camp, Art Club for children aged 3 to 5, and Saturday Art Making for children 6 to 14. The gallery also offers a gift shop with unique products, and a very welcoming café. Instrumental and Orchestral Music in Sault Ste MarieEach season, the Sault Symphony Orchestra offers five superb concerts, often hosting visiting performers such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the regular season, the Orchestra also puts on the outdoor Musicfest every June, often affectionately referred to by residents as Bratwurst, Beer & Beethoven. Members of the Orchestra also offer lessons to the public. The Algoma Conservatory of Music teaches hundreds of students each year from their school located at Algoma University. Each spring, these students compete for scholarships and top honours at the Kiwanis Music Festival, open for the public’s enjoyment. More than 600 individuals and groups from a variety of age groups compete in seven different divisions. The Conservatory also hosts seven wonderful concerts each year, including three large main stage performances, and four smaller more intimate experiences. These concerts often feature world class performers, such as Canadian Brass and touring opera companies. Theatre Companies of the SaultSault Ste Marie is home to numerous theatre groups who put on numerous performances each year. Perhaps most well-known within the Sault is the Musical Comedy Guild, which puts on one musical play each year. Past performances have included Peter Pan, Pippin, and Have I Got a Revue for You, Tony! Located in the city's West End, the Sault Theatre Workshop also puts on several smaller performances. Capable of hosting about 130 audience members, the group puts on such plays as Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet as part of a more personal experience. The Lock City Grand Theatre, located on historic Queen Street, hosts many performers each year, including musicians such as The Breakmen and Gates of Winter. The Grand also offers excellent dinner theatre, with first-rate performances of such productions as Inspector Drake and the Black Widow and the occasional murder mystery. Algoma Fall FestivalEvery fall, Sault Ste Marie hosts a variety of performances as part of the Algoma Fall Festival. These include performances by musicians, such as Sarah Slean, dancers, such as the National Ballet of Canada, and comedians, such as Women Fully Clothed.
