A Christmas Carol, Santa Claus Parade, Wreath-Making Activities

Visiting Casa Loma and Black Creek Pioneer Village, as well as attending concerts at Massey and Roy Thomson Hall are popular family holiday events in Toronto.

Christmas is an exciting and busy time of year and, although there is always so much to do, many parents and families experience the real meaning of Christmas by taking time out to enjoy holiday events as a family. Although it can be tough to squeeze in family time during hectic holiday schedules, many of the Toronto Christmas activities and shows listed below are relatively short and perfectly suited for children.

A Christmas Carol Toronto

There are several productions of the Charles Dickens' classic that are specially tailored to children, which run during the holiday season:

  • A Christmas Carol, Roy Thomson Hall, 60 Simcoe Street, 416-872-4255, Dec. 6, 2009, 3 p.m. features an abridged performance of the popular story by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with stage actors and a narrator, followed by Christmas favourites. Adults $59-$18, Children ages 2-12, $30 and $15, Children under 2 not permitted.
  • A Christmas Carol, Montgomery Inn, 4709 Dundas Street West at Islington Avenue, 416-394-8113, Dec. 4 at 6-7 p.m., Dec. 5 at 3-4 p.m. The Humber River Shakespeare Company presents their version of the Christmas classic. Pay-what-you-can.

Santa Clause Parade Toronto

Toronto offers several Santa Claus Parades during the month of November in case families cannot attend the original:

  • Santa Claus Parade, Sun., Nov. 15, 12:30 p.m., starts at Bloor and Christie Streets, runs east to University, turns south until Dundas Street, turns east until Yonge Street, proceeds south until Front Street, then east to Church Street. Families should arrive early to get a good spot along the route.
  • Main Street Markham 37th Annual Santa Claus Parade, Sat. Nov. 28, 11 a.m. The Main Street Markham hosts the parade, which features activities for families including carollers, fiddlers, strolling musicians, a street barbeque, and opportunities for children to get their picture taken with Santa who will be seated in his castle.

Wreath-Making Classes Toronto

Adults can spend the day with their children, sharing in the bond of creativity while making a Christmas wreath at Adult and Child/Youth Wreath-Making Workshops Colborne Lodge, High Park, 416-392-6916. Classes are offered in the 19th-century kitchen, along with a tour of the decorated house and light refreshments. Classes for one adult and one child (7-10) are $37.50 plus taxes; each additional child is $10. Classes for one adult and one youth (10-15) are $47.50 plus taxes; each additional youth is $20. Adult/child classes are Sun. Nov. 29, 10 a.m.; Adult/youth classes are Thurs. Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. and Sat. Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.

Christmas at Casa Loma

Children have always enjoyed the enchantment of a castle, particularly one that's dressed for the holidays.The Toronto Star Presents Celebrate the Holidays With Us at Casa Loma, 1 Austin Terrace, 416-923-1171. Magician Lawrence LaRouche and Majinx will present illusions bringing stories such as Jack and the Bean Stalk, Hansel and Gretel and Pinnochio. Santa will also be on hand. Shows run between Mon. Nov. 30, 2009 and Sun. Jan. 3, 2010 at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. No shows from Mon. to Thurs. during Nov. 30 to Dec. 17. Adults $18, Seniors/Youth $12.50, Children (4-13) $10.50.

Black Creek Pioneer Village

Parents will provide their children with a glimpse of Christmases past at the recreated Victorian Black Creek Pioneer Village, 1000 Murray Ross Parkway, 416-736-1733, which offers the Christmas by Lamplight program on Dec. 5, 12 and 19 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Village is decorated in holiday decor, with candlelight and oil lamps, story telling, sugar plums, chestnuts, hot apple cider, sing along with carollers and Victorian games. Guests can make old-fashioned Christmas decorations. $32 per person.

Parents in Toronto will find there are numerous holiday activities to share with their children during the Christmas season. Whether opting to see a dramatic presentation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, sharing the fun of wreath-making classes at High Park, listening to stories at Casa Loma, or waiting for Santa to arrive during the Santa Claus Parade, families will experience the joy of the season while spending time together at these seasonal events.
